Educational robotics exploration
A little personality. A lot of possibility.
Meet Chuo is an independent educational project exploring how a small companion robot might express personality through movement, animated eyes, sensors, and software. It is a place to learn, sketch, build, and test ideas, one iteration at a time.
Currently in early design and prototype development. Hardware performance is not yet validated.
About
Exploring the human side of robotics.
Small robots feel approachable when they seem to notice us and respond with character. That feeling comes from many disciplines working together: a compact mechanical structure that moves smoothly, electronics that sense and actuate, embedded software that reacts in real time, and character animation that gives motion and expression a clear personality.
Meet Chuo is an independent educational robotics project exploring how small robotic systems can communicate personality through movement, animated expressions, sensors, and embedded software. The goal is to study how these pieces fit together and to document what is learned along the way.
The Idea
Technology with a little more heart.
This independent project explores how expressive robotics might make everyday interactions with technology feel more natural, approachable, and engaging.
-
01
Chuo Companion
Exploring a compact robotic character with expressive eyes, gentle movement, and experimental responses to touch and sound.
Current exploration -
02
Chuo Desk
A stationary desktop concept exploring ambient information, animated expressions, and simple interactions.
Future concept -
03

Chuo Bop
An articulated robotics concept exploring playful gestures, walking mechanisms, and expressive dance movements.
Future concept
Companion is the current design exploration. Desk, Rover, and Bop are speculative ideas only. They have not undergone detailed engineering design, fabrication, or testing, and whether one common head and electronics design could be adapted to different bodies has not yet been demonstrated.
Engineering
Three areas of investigation
These are topics being studied and explored, not proven capabilities.
-
Mechanical Design
Investigating compact structures, pan/tilt motion, CAD modeling, packaging, and mechanical clearances for a small desktop-scale robot.
-
Embedded Electronics
Exploring displays, microcontrollers, sensors, actuation, and electrical integration, and how they connect into a single small system.
-
Expression & Interaction
Experimenting with animated eyes, reaction logic, responsive motion, and behavior systems that might help a robot feel approachable.
Development progress
Big ideas. Small, careful steps.
The project is in early design and prototype development. Hardware performance is not yet validated, and no results are claimed here.
Each stage below is taken one iteration at a time, and its status is updated only when it is actually true.

Educational purpose
Learning by making
Meet Chuo is a personal opportunity to learn interdisciplinary robotics engineering. By iterating on designs, building prototypes, and running experiments, the project is a hands-on way to practice mechanical design, electronics, embedded programming, and human–robot interaction together.
